Garage door history facts
You won't find his name in history books, but C. G. Johnson, invented the upward-lifting
garage door in 1921. Followed by the electric door opener in 1926. Today, the garage
door company he began is still recognized as one the leading source of manufacturing
garage doors and operator systems for commercial, industrial and residential applications.
Garage doors had always been made out of wood. But there were several disadvantages
to wood doors. Wood was subject to the weather, warped by the heat of the sun, and
rotted by the rain. So it needed periodic maintenance like scraping and re-painting
– or even total replacement. However, technology came up with some great alternatives.
Aluminum garage doors where manufactured in the late 1940s by two men named Mr.
Harry Stevens & Mr. Theuit after world war two they had the idea from there years
of working with building aluminum aircraft. Making these great light weight garage
doors became more and more popular as time went on the quality of paint was great
and they didn’t rust. At one time Stevens & Tueit manufactured all the aluminum
garage doors for Sears making up to 50 garage doors per day. Galvanized steel garage
doors were the next innovation, as to what I have read coming into use in the 1970s.
Steel wasn’t as good an insulator as wood, but if the door needed insulation, they
could put two pieces together, with polystyrene insulation between them – a Styrofoam
sandwich. That helped to keep garages warmer and, at the same time, increased the
garage door’s life by several decades. Steel garage doors when they first came out
where some what pricey but competitive with wood garage doors. Today because of
the volume of steel garage doors sold the prices have become very affordable. And
the largest selling value out of all the garage doors.
The garage door opener became the next natural fulfillment of the consumer’s desires.
People were always looking for an easier way of opening those heavy garage doors
then by hand. They had to get out of their cars in the rain and snow. So again,
with necessity being the mother of invention, along came the automatic garage door
opener. Now people could drive up to their houses and open the garage door as they
approached, protecting themselves from the weather. They didn’t have to get out
of their cars until they were safe and dry inside their garages. Popularity of the
garage doors openers grew heavily in the late 1950s. As home building stores started
to sell garage door openers off there shelves and in the late 1960s. Combined with
the ever-progressing electrical technology of the day electric gate openers, Building
contractor where using electric garage door openers more and more as standard features
in new homes construction. Garage door openers were a wonderful invention, but it
created a whole new safety issue for people. While children may have been fascinated
by garage door openers it became a source of danger and death to unattended children.
What could be more enjoyable to a child between 2 and 8 years old, than watching
an automatic garage door opening and closing all by itself? Garage doors were a
fascination to little children. It was reported that at least 85 children in the
U.S. had died or suffered permanent brain damage between 1974 and 1995, in accidents
involving automatic garage door openers. Many of these injuries that I hear of where
from people buying garage door openers from the home building stores installing
them incorrectly and on garage doors that where not properly balanced or adjusted.
My feeling is that not all products should be sold through the home building stores
garage doors, garage door openers, water heaters just to name a few things. I have
also read where people have purchased hot water heaters, tried to install the water
heater themselves to save a few dollars. By not installing the gas or the vent properly
on the newly installed water heater they cause home fires, explosion, carbon monoxide
poisoning, death and injury to there loved ones. Some mistakes are too permanent.
This terrible situation of death and injury with garage door openers led to the
Consumer Product Safety Commission in the U.S., in 1993, to pass a law that required
all garage doors to be equipped with photoelectric sensors and pressure-sensitive
sensors. The photoelectric sensors were electric eyes mounted 6 inches from the
ground, while the pressure-sensitive sensors were mounted on the bottom of the door.
If either of these sensors detected any object under a garage door while it was
closing, they would automatically reverse themselves and fully open. Unfortunately,
although these sensors were installed, many of them didn’t work as well as they
should. At one time, tests were done on 50 openers; only 40% of them reversed and,
before reversing, they exerted 130 pounds of pressure, enough to break an arm or
leg of a small child. Subsequently, better sensors have been developed and now,
an injury caused by a garage door closing on somebody is very rare.
Since 1990, an average of 20,000 people each year have been treated in hospital
emergency rooms for injuries related to garage doors. (Source: U.S. Consumer Products
Safety Commission) Follow these guidelines to ensure your door is installed properly
and to keep your home secure:
- Use a recognized vendor and distributor of garage doors for sales and servicing.
- Keep your garage door locked at all times.
- Routinely lock every door connecting the garage to the house.
- Be alert to security issues when handling your garage door opener; it serves as
a key to your home. Avoid leaving it unattended. Separate it from car keys if leaving
keys with valet, etc.
- Test your electric garage door opener for safety by placing two-inch thick block
of wood underneath garage door. This obstruction should trigger directional reverse.
If door continues to press down against obstruction, replace or repair immediately.
(This offers protection against injuries to children.)
- Mount wall control panel out of reach of children. Keep remote controls away from
children.
- Arrange to have garage door serviced annually. call Best Garage Door 323-225-2898
